Benefits
Effective reversal of neuromuscular blockade
Rapid restoration of muscle strength
Essential support in anesthesia practice
Reliable BP-compliant injectable formulation
Suitable for hospital and surgical use
Usage Instructions
Administered intravenously (IV) or intramuscularly (IM) by trained healthcare professionals
Often given in combination with an anticholinergic agent (e.g., atropine or glycopyrrolate) to reduce muscarinic side effects
Dosage depends on patient condition and clinical indication
Continuous monitoring of respiratory and cardiac function is recommended
Mechanism of Action
Neostigmine inhibits the enzyme acetylcholinesterase, preventing the breakdown of acetylcholine. This increases acetylcholine concentration at the neuromuscular junction, enhancing cholinergic transmission and reversing muscle paralysis caused by non-depolarizing neuromuscular blocking agents.
Indications
Neostigmine Injection BP 0.5mg/mL is indicated for:
Reversal of non-depolarizing neuromuscular blockade after surgery
Management of myasthenia gravis
Treatment of postoperative urinary retention
Management of postoperative abdominal distension (paralytic ileus)
Side Effects
Possible side effects include:
Bradycardia
Increased salivation
Nausea and vomiting
Abdominal cramps
Sweating
Bronchospasm (rare)
Precautions
Use cautiously in patients with asthma
Monitor heart rate during administration
Avoid in mechanical obstruction conditions
Careful dose titration in elderly patients
Use under strict medical supervision
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to neostigmine or bromides
Mechanical obstruction of gastrointestinal or urinary tract
Peritonitis
Severe bradycardia
Caution in asthma patients
